A Note from the
producer of "The Gospel", Rainforest Films' Will Packer
True Story....
As Filmmakers, we at Rainforest Films believe that there should be a
breadth of films aimed at African-American audiences that represent the
true diversity reflected in our community. When I first pitched a movie to
Hollywood about Black people who are intelligent and articulate Christians
- the BIG question from Studio Execs was "Who's the audience for this type
of film?!". I was told that Black people only like comedy, cursing, and
violence. Just look at the films aimed at this audience that make money! I
was told that the church audience is just a SMALL niche within the black
community. I was told that a film like this would never be REALLY
successful and it certainly didn't make sense to bring it to the big
screen. Well...guess what....over a year later and this film IS coming to
the BIG SCREEN and with your support it WILL be successful. Congregations
and organizations are mobilizing, advance tickets are being sold, theaters
are selling out, emails are being sent and the BUZZ is spreading. I want
to thank you for being part of a Movement to show Hollywood how wrong they
can be about us.
The Gospel is soul-stirring entertainment with GREAT Music that will have
you dancing in the aisles! It's a drama with an important message that
deals with REAL church people and REAL church issues.
It deals with Ego, Greed, Mega-churches vs. Smaller Churches, young church
leadership vs. the established old guard, and staying true to your Faith
while dealing with the harsh realities of the secular world.
I've been awed and humbled by the response to the film. It's been
overwhelming. Entire church congregations all around the country are
buying blocks of tickets to see it opening weekend. Thank you for sending
emails and talking about what an important film this is. Thank you for
getting it into your church announcements. Thank you in advance for
helping to defy the odds! Many of you have asked how else you can help
with our efforts on this film. The answer is simple: 1) Buy ADVANCE
tickets - The best way to show that there is interest and awareness for
this film and assist with our efforts to add more screens and make it
available in more cities is to purchase tickets in advance! 2) Spread the
word - Word of mouth is the most powerful weapon we have. The
Mega-marketing budgets of the other films opening on October 7th dwarf
that of The Gospel. But one thing this film has is a strong collective of
people who are talking, forwarding emails and spreading the word about The
Gospel. It's that spirit that will make this film a success!
My Sincerest Thanks,
Will Packer
